The bench on Platform 1
It is just over 7 months since we lost one of St George’s congregation, Gary Openshaw, to cancer. Since he was a modest man, not many people knew that he was a senior and highly respected manager on the railway. He was Area General Manager, in charge of all the signallers in Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside as well as the station staff at Manchester Piccadilly. It was decided that there should be a memorial to Gary on the station and so many of his railway colleagues and his family gathered on Platform 1 on Tuesday 14th February at around 10am for the short ceremony.
The Route Managing Director spoke about the decision to install a wooden bench in Gary’s memory, as he loved to help people and it was seen as a fitting tribute to a man who would often don his blue tabard and direct people when things went awry. She also said that it made her smile to think of Gary’s bench, as he was not often seen sitting still for long, since he was full of energy. Gary’s daughter then unveiled the bench, his son unveiled the memorial plaque and his wife placed a floral arrangement next to the bench. There were a few tears shed and many happy memories shared.
The bench is inscribed “In Memory of Gary Openshaw”, “An inspiration to all” and at the base, “Seize the day”. It also has pictures of a coffee cup and a Blackberry, two things that Gary was rarely seen without as he waited for his train to and from work. Next time you pass through Piccadilly station, have a look on Platform 1 at this simple memorial to a lovely man, who lived for too short a time but had a huge, positive impact on many people.
